Yo-yo projects

My ten-year-old enjoys hand sewing but I am running out of ideas for her. She has done quite a bit of embroidery - but you don't need an endless number of embroidered pillow cases.

Her aunt gave her this Clover yo-yo maker for Christmas. It makes yo-yo-making so simple and she has had so much fun turning fabric scraps into yo-yos.

But then what?

She sewed some of her creations into a rectangle and we are enjoying it in the middle of our dining room table. I suppose we could make a bedsize throw with them but I'm looking for some other idea that would use a lot of yo-yos of random colors.

Do you have any suggestions?

  1. You can thread them onto elastic or stout thread to make dolls or animals ( I have seen clowns and rabbits especially ) often with beads in between the yoyos and a bell at the end for feet, with a stuffed fabric head. I am sure there will be pictures somewhere online, they are very vintage.

  3. I LOVE yo-yos! I have a throw made with them, and I've seen them added to garments, as flowers. Maybe she could then embroider stems.

  5. I've seen vests, curtains, tote bags, throw pillows, bed spreads.....many of these pieces are backed with solid fabric. I have a box full, it's a good hand work project for long car rides, I just haven't decided what to do with them either.

Also, do a google search for yo-yo Christmas ornaments; there are a lot of free patterns.

    Happy sewing!

  12. Just yesterday I have seen a curtain made of fabric and yoyos. It was not symmetrical, in light colors and the fabric was slightly transparent. Unfortunately I cannot find the link again! :( (when I do, I will send it.) But I am sure you will create something beautiful together with your very talented daughter!
    Best wishes!

  14. What a lovely centerpiece. The yo-you can be turned into doors and toys as well. The following websites will take you to two idea pages.

  16. One of my friends was given a baby sweater that had tiny yo-yo's added along the hem. A cute way to personalize a baby gift.

Also I just stumbled upon this tonight and thought of your request. http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2009/02/fabric-yo-yos.html

  18. I actually thought in the first picture shared that she had made a throw pillow covering!!!! That looked good with the dark background, maybe for a pillow on a little girl's bed. :)

  20. These are really nice! I recently saw a tutorial on making these at home and figured they'd be a great "snow weather" craft for the children. Great post!
