Faithfulness and Dutch Ovens

Long time readers will remember our tradition of hosting a dutch oven gathering every summer. The heat on Saturday was blistering but that didn't keep more than twenty pots from showing up at our house. The twelfth year resulted in an amazing line-up of food as usual.

How do you choose?

My dad remembered Ed by asking us all to sing the chorus of Find Us Faithful. I don't think dad remembered that friends had sang that song at our wedding, eighteen year ago. I had not thought of that song in years, but it is even more poignant than it was on our wedding day.

I've been thinking a lot about what it means to walk by faith and not by sight. There is a lot I don't know, but I'm grateful for the heritage of faithfulness I have been given.

Find Us Faithful
by John Mohr

We're pilgrims on the journey
Of the narrow road,
And those who've gone before us
Line the way.
Cheering on the faithful,
Encouraging the weary,
Their lives a stirring testament
To God's sustaining grace.

Surrounded by so great
A cloud of witnesses,
Let us run the race
Not only for the prize,
But as those who've gone before us.
Let us leave to those behind us,
The heritage of faithfulness
Passed on thru godly lives.

After all our hopes and dreams
Have come and gone,
And our children sift thru all
We've left behind,
May the clues that they discover,
And the mem'ries they uncover,
Become the light that leads them,
To the road we each must find.

O may all who come behind us
Find us faithful,
May the fire of our devotion
Light their way.
May the footprints that we leave,
Lead them to believe,
And the lives we live
Inspire them to obey.
O may all who come behind us
Find us faithful.

  3. What a beautiful gathering. I remember reading before of how much Ed enjoyed this friendly competition.
That is one of my favorite songs and I listen to it often. Oh how I want those who come after me to remember my faithfulness.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  4. I am so sorry to read of your loss Gina. I lost my husband from a lymphoma and while it was the hardest thing I have ever experienced, it brought me back to my faith z and taught me about the importance of gratefulness.

  10. I'm so glad you're still doing your Dutch oven gathering!

Reading of last year's gathering inspired me to try to find a Dutch oven for our family. I finally received one on loan from my father, and then it completely sat and collected dust until this year when I read again of your gathering. You inspired us to actually GET IT OUT and use it! We made banana bread, and it was a success. Thank you for the inspiration!!

  11. Do you have a particular size of Dutch oven that you find works best for large family cooking? We were thinking of a 14", but weren't sure if that was big enough. Many thanks for any thoughts!

    1. We have 10, 12, and 14 inch. We find them all useful for various things but the 12 inch works well for any recipe that would be put in a 9x13 cake pan so I find that size the most useful.
