Who knew a can of beans could turn into something so yummy. And with a food processor, it is super simple, taking only minutes
Tahini is a sauce made of toasted sesame seeds and can be found in ethnic grocery stores.
Hummus
1 (15 oz) can of chickpeas (also called garbanzo beans)
3 T olive oil
3 T tahini
1 T lemon juice
1-2 cloves of minced garlic
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
Drain and rinse chickpeas. Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender and blend until a smooth paste.
Drizzle a little olive oil and sprinkle paprika on top for garnish.
Serve with crackers, carrot sticks, or cucumber slices.
We love hummus! We also make a black bean hummus that the kids like. It uses peanut butter instead of tahini. In a pinch when out of tahini I have even used the peanut butter with the chickpea recipe.

ReplyDeleteWe love hummus! I make a very untraditional chocolate hummus version when I want to get my kids to eat a lot of protein willingly. It's just one can of garbanzo beans, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, 1 quarter cup maple syrup, half a teaspoon vanilla, and a little bit of water to get it to the consistency that you like. It's great on fruit, pretzels, and graham crackers! I'll never tell the kids that it's actually made with beans 😉

DeleteYes, hummus is delicious! My recipe is very similar to yours. Did you ever try chocolate hummus? I found the recipe in a newspaper and thought it could be a substitute for Nutella - which I don't keep on hand because it's too irresistible! It was okay - but I haven't made it since. :)

We love humuus... especially roasted red pepper humuus. I've not tried making it but I will be on the lookout for tahini and try... it seems pretty easy.
ReplyDeleteI love hummus. Our daughter who lived in Portland, OR for ten years introduced us to it and we've never looked back. I make my own too, as it's much more cost effective and you can add the flavors you like.

Hi I love Hummus and often make a red pepper one adding 4 roasted red peppers from a jar before adding any liquid. Add Paprika and Tabasco if you want a bit of a kick and hotter.

I replace mine with peanut butter sometimes. Other nut butters might work also. My mother in law makes her own tahini from sesame seeds but you'd have to check how online. In a pinch I once used olive oil.
DeleteThis recipe is great, simple, but I can tell by just looking at it that it is delicious. Several years ago I wanted to make hummus (and baba ganoush). It was interesting trying to find tahini in the Chambersburg area. "You're looking for what??" By the way, Giant has it. I wouldn't want to substitute.

Hummus is one of our favourite meals. I sometimes do make it with white beans, although then it's technically not hummus anymore, as hummus means chickpeas in Arabic. Maybe you should try some other middle eastern recipes, such as maqlouba, kabsa, falafel or kebab.
As for tahini substitutes- i think it's best to use some sort of nut butter. Maybe cashew or almond. I honestly think peanut butter shouldnt be used instead, as it has a very different flavour. Where i live, i cannot buy tahini so i usually make my own.
I love garlic flavored hummus. I also tried it with a bit of basil pesto. I am the only one who likes it in this family so, I usually just buy a small container a couple of times a year. Your recipe looks really good.
ReplyDeleteMy recipe calls for making your own tahini: Toast sesame seeds 5 minutes in the oven at 350 or in a skillet. Cool, blend with olive oil and process until smooth. 1/4 cup oil to 1 cup seeds
ReplyDeleteI have made the peanut butter chocolate chip cookies made with chickpeas. (You can find it online). They are VERY good! My picky son liked them though i didn't tell him what was in them. :) Chris W.
