But at my friend Flo's house in Michigan, the sap is still running.
Flo includes facts about maple syrup at the end of the book and shares a few of her favorite recipes incorporating maple syrup. If you are a long time reader, you may have enjoyed Flo's wonderful coffee cake recipes.
Flo is giving away a copy of The Sugar Shack to a Home Joys reader. To enter the giveaway, please let a comment, give us your email address, and share your favorite way to enjoy maple syrup.
To order you own copy of The Sugar Shack, email florencejfox at gmail.com . Cost of one book is $8.99. Michigan readers pay 6% sales tax. Payment by check is preferred. All book orders will have free shipping until May 31, 2019.
You may also enjoy My First Deer Hunt in which Flo's son Laramie shares the story of bow hunting with his dad. Like The Sugar Shack, it is written from a child's perspective for children ages 4-7 and illustrated with full-color photos. Ordering information and price are the same for both books.
Giveaway will be open for one week and is open to readers with a US postal address.

Since I am from South Dakota, I suppose I know nothing of "real" maple syrup, but we enjoy the storeboughten kind on pancakes and in baked oatmeal. Julie
ReplyDeleteMaple syrup in icing makes a yummy cake topping. (maple syrup is a real treat at our house for anything - on waffles, in baked oatmeal etc) I love to win the book - to learn more about the process of collecting and making it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember the yummy coffeecake series!
ReplyDeleteWe love dipping freshly deepfried donuts in maple syrup! Here in ON our friends are still collecting sap and making syrup...and maple sugar candy and taffy cones. My children love the latter two as well!
And now that we have a jug of fresh syrup here, my children are revealing more favorite ways; a son likes it with his breakfast sausage, another will put it on plain or Greek yogurt and granola. We also like it as a sweetener in our beverages, tea, coffee etc. And the usual, on pancakes, waffles, in baking. Thanks for the giveaway, and blessings to you and your family. You're in our prayers!

We love maple syrup on waffles, French toast, baked oatmeal and drizzled over vanilla ice cream.:) greeneyed65@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteAs a child, we had a bottomless supply of real maple syrup, thanks to Grandpa’s woods. So in those days, we used it liberally —our pancakes became islands in syrupy lakes. But several things have changed since then. My current favorite way of using this liquid gold is to drizzle a teaspoon onto plain Greek yogurt and top it with berries. Skinny mama soon again. :-) johnandsaranolt@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWe also have been cooking our own maple syrup, it was our 1st season. So we learned alot of new stuff along the way! I love recipes using maple syrup, and we all enjoy it over breakfast foods!

Good morning Gina! I've been praying for you all. I like my maple syrup straight from the bottle. I mean straight from the bottle on pancakes, waffles and homemade granola.

ReplyDeleteWe like it on pancakes best! crystalzeiset@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWe have been collecting/boiling with our young children in MN. Such a fun family activity. The kids love riding behind the 4 wheeler in a sled as we go around the pasture collecting each day. We have mostly boxelder trees. The taste is delicious and it seems to run earlier than the maples but it is a higher ratio with less yield. emilymsmith@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE maple syrup on oatmeal, pancakes, recipes, plain yogurt, shakes and anything that needs sweetening!

It's definitely a very intriguing process! I love it as a pancake topping! tisha98@juno.com
ReplyDeleteI have a blueberry French toast recipe that has a bit of maple syrup in it, The recipe is basically a bread pudding and it is scrumptious! That is one way I use maple syrup, but my absolute favorite way to enjoy maple syrup is to pour it over buttered pancakes which have been cut into squares. I love when the sweet syrup soaks into each delicious bite of pancake. YUM!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win such a wonderful book. I so enjoy reading your blog, how you share the joys of raising your family, your adventures and activities. You are in my heart and prayers.
French toast!
ReplyDeleteI’d love this book to read to my southern littles who know very little about how we get maple syrup!
jeffkanagy86@gmail.com
Not entering the giveaway, but I wanted to let you know that I just came by from Linda at The Little Homestead. She told me about your husband. I just prayed for him and your family.
ReplyDeleteLaura of Harvest Lane Cottage
We have been doing our own maple syrup for the last 5+ years. The first year our system was pretty primitive and the syrup had a smoked flavor. That was the best syrup ever, and I wish there was a way to boil efficiently over an open fire! We use a lot on pancakes and waffles, but I like baking with it too. It makes wonderful pecan pie and granola. lovinajoy79@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI am a fairly new reader to your blog. You are the one who gotgme started on paperbackswap.com :) I am a teacher on sabbatical and I would love to win this book. I enjoy maple syrup on pancakes or to sweeten my iced coffee. You may email me at: rakuhns85@gmail.com.

ReplyDeletekrabigail98@yahoo.com
I love maple syrup on my mac n cheese! tonynwendy at att.net
ReplyDeleteOooooh. Maple syrup is a nostalgic favorite of mine. I grew up in Michigan, and I can tell you that it is never better than taste-tested straight out of the evaporating pan. That would be with a spoon.
ReplyDeleteBut yes, on oatmeal pancakes, on waffles, in iced coffee- pass it please!
I would love to win this book for my 4 year old son, to help me pass on the love even while we live in the south.
Thanks for hosting this giveaway, Gina, Kenzie, and Flo.
On pancakes or waffles! lanitarhess@gmail.com
ReplyDeletescrapple! I have some folks in this house who would love this book. Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteWe enjoy Maple Syrup but RARELY on pancakes. We particularly enjoy what used to be called 'B' grade, for the intense flavor. Now it's all 'A' grade. How dumb. Sure, we look for 'robust flavor' or some clue that we are not getting stuck with low vitamin/low flavor, but 'B' grade was the better way. We use maple syrup in smoothies where better health is the object.
