The first book is Walking the Talk, Calling All Believers in Christ to Obedience by Arvin Martin.
I'm often asked questions about what the Mennonites believe. Mennonites seek to live a life of obedience to the Word of God and take literally the commands of Christ. Walking the Talk never mentions Mennonites, or any other denomination or church group, but the book is about radical obedience to Christ and His Word, so if you want to know what the Mennonites believe, this book would be a good place to start.
Walking the Talk begins with the foundation - asking the big questions about who we are, what is our purpose, and where are we going. Following are chapters on such topics as the Word of God, the Holy Spirit, and Faith vs. Works. The last half of the book delves into practical areas of obedience such as music and finances. I like that Arvin lays down the principle before discussing the application. For example, he shares a chapter on humility before tackling the subject of modesty.
There are two things I especially liked about Walking the Talk. The first is the huge amount of Scripture the book includes. This is a Word-saturated book.
I also appreciated the short chapters. Some days it feels like I don't even have time to pick up my Bible. With the short chapters and the quoted Scripture, I could enjoy a Bible study even when I didn't have much time. Each chapter ends with some study questions to help reflect over the past chapter.
Arvin is one of the ministers at our church and I was able to read the first draft of his book several years ago. It is fun to see the book come together. I'm grateful for the huge amount of time he has put into this project.

ReplyDeleteOne of the books I finished reading and thoroughly enjoyed is Money Secrets of the Amish: Finding true Abundance in Simplicity, Saving and Sharing. It is a quick read with interviews and stories that I found both inspiring and challenging to be a better steward. No matter what faith one might be this book has ideas that can be applied to all of us.

If the Lord allows everyone to be asleep in the morning, my bible is the book I read. However, when the baby was much younger and sleeping more, I read God's Smugglers. A book about Brother Andrew. I won't comment on any books, but I will say that I'm finally having success with my WW bread - I'm not going to give your recipe all the credit as several other things factor in; but I wasn't getting any oven spring, now all of a sudden it's rising like crazy and I have been using your recipes and tips along with the changing of my yeast and trying a new oven. ReplyDeleteBook giveaways are irresistible! :) As for recent favorites - one would be Pablo Yoder's newest book "Home on the Blue Ridge." It's a sequel to "Home on the Rock Pile," and my children love it. We're almost finished with that one. Another interesting one is "Trailblazer," which is about the life of Pablo's parents, Sanford and Martha Yoder. It's good you specified a book we enjoyed recently, because my list could get quite long!

This sounds like a good read. A recent book that inspired me is I am Malala. It is not a devotional nor a religious book, but it did remind me that being able to be educated is not something to take for granted

I'd love to read this book, as I'm thinking a lot about how to be an effective witness for Jesus in my community where "the Church" is seen as something that has messed up dozens of people. One book I really enjoyed recently was Vera's Journey ... so many good life lessons in there! - Karen S.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to know more about the Mennonite faith as their beliefs seem to be more like my own. I think this looks like an excellent book. I recently enjoyed reading Prayers and Peanut Butter and I highky recommend it, especially for mothers of young children. We all feel like we are failing at times, and I've learned that the trials and frustrations of raising children are truly teachable moments that they must experience to learn and grow. It made me look at things a different way.

ReplyDeleteI recommend Vera's Journey by Judy Yoder. It's a biography and it's a wonderful book. I cried many times because of the pain and sorrow Vera Heatwole went through during her lifetime.

This book sounds like one I would enjoy. One book I recently read would be "Getting Along with People God's Way" by John Colblentz. It really made me stop and think about the different relationships in my life, from my family growing up to my marriage today.
