French Toast

I loved french toast as a child, but only when I found this french toast recipe recently did I fall in love with it as an adult.

This recipe is about as healthy as the bread you choose. I don't particularly like it with sourdough bread, though a mild sourdough is okay. But a loaf of whole wheat bread is perfect. French toast is a great way to use up stale bread.

French Toast
from Mennonite Girls Can Cook

1/2 cup flour (I use whole wheat.)
2 T sugar (I replaced with 1 T honey.)
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups milk
6 eggs
1 loaf bread, thickly sliced

Blend all ingredients together except bread, of course. Dip the bread slices in the batter one at a time, turn them over, and allow to soak for a few moments to absorb.

Fry slices until browned on both sides. Serve with your favorite pancake topping.

  1. Oh yes, we've been making this for years. We call it french toast sticks. I used to buy them at the store for a treat then we came across this recipe. Love it!

  3. I'm intrigued by the flour in your recipe. What makes you love this now?
I only make oven French toast anymore. We love that, and it's a great do-ahead breakfast.

  5. My children (and I) would love to try this recipe out. Weekday mornings are just very busy. Can you assemble it the night before and pop it into the oven in the morning?

  6. Oops - I should have read the directions first before posting. I suppose I could still fit this into a 9x 12 so that it's an oven-baked french toast breakfast? Looking for other ideas besides cereal ($) and toast and oatmeal.

  7. In the UK, that's called 'eggy bread' and I'm sure they don't eat that in France. It's how my mum fed me as a child, it made an egg feed three children

  10. Margo -
Before finding this recipe, I used only egg and milk, the flour makes a thicker less "gummy" toast. I think it is far better!

I do sometimes make fresh toast ahead in a casserole, but I have another recipe for that. I'll share it another day!

  12. Mmm! We make french toast all the time around here! Sometimes I add cinnamon and nutmeg to the egg batter, and it tastes like dessert for breakfast. =)
