Usually on Mondays I've been sharing updates on our house addition. But busy schedules meant very little house progress this past week. Ed did work on more brick laying on the chimney and has it about high enough to need scaffolding.
And I have a new cookbook to talk about today instead!
What happens when ten great cooks get together to blog about food? If you are a reader of the blog Mennonite Girls Can Cook - you know it means lots of good recipes!
Today these ten women released a cookbook based on the great recipes from their blog - plus a few new ones. Like the blog, stories from their Russian Mennonite heritage and inspiration from God's Word are interspersed throughout the recipes.
The publisher sent me a review copy of Mennonite Girls Can Cook and I wasn't disappointed. My favorite part of the book is the photos. Every recipe includes a photo and recipes with numerous steps have detailed step-by-step photos.
I find it interesting that though I grew up with a Mennonite cooking heritage, these recipes are much different, coming from a Canadian Russian Mennonite background instead of the Pennsylvania Dutch cooking I'm accustomed to. Some of the recipes are for complicated "special occasion" meals but many are simple recipes with basic ingredients that the author's grandmothers made in the hard days when food was scarce.
One of the authors has Celiacs and numerous gluten free recipes are included. Though we enjoy gluten at my house, there is so many on a gluten free diet now that I appreciate having some recipe ideas.
I rate a cookbook by how many times I say "I have to make that" and this one won top honors! The publisher generously supplied a copy of Mennonite Girls Can Cook to give to one of you. If you like a chance of winning this cookbook, leave a comment with a way to contact you.
You can also purchase Mennonite Girls Can Cook through Amazon or Herald Press. All author royalties are going to feed hungry children. For the first year the funds are going to Ukraine to the Good Shepherd Shelter.
If you are looking for more Mennonite cooking, I love the Mennonite Country Style Recipes, More With Less, and Kay's Country Cookin' though none of these three cookbooks are the visual treat of Mennonite Girls Can Cook.
Leave a comment to win your own copy of Mennonite Girls Can Cook. Giveaway will be open for one week and a winner will be chosen through Random.org.

Just wondering and maybe you do this and I just missed it somewhere. But do you bake with SOFT white wheat ???? I have been hearing its wonderful wheat flour that makes the best cookies.
I've read their blog before but somehow never added them to my google reader. Thanks for the reminder and thanks for a great giveaway, too!
ReplyDeleteSam -
ReplyDeleteI linked to their blog in the first link in the post!
Karisa -
I tried using soft white wheat for cookies and non-yeast recipes and really couldn't see much difference then hard white wheat. Since then I've just stayed with hard white wheat for everything. Maybe I should try it again since I too have heard of others who like it.

I am of Quaker Great-Grand Parents and they had passed on her Mennonite cookbook in the family...was passed from my Grandmother to my Mother.
ReplyDeleteWhen my Mother passed away in 1989 at the young age of 65 the cookbook came-up 'missing' from my parents home sometime during the funeral. I never found out who removed it from the house and have looked for one like it ever since, never finding one like it.
One of my favorite recipes was 'Finger Pie' and the 'Sour Dough Starter' recipes. We use it to make pancakes, waffles and all kinds of breads.
Would love to have one of the MGCC cookbooks.
Bless you and thanks to all of you for helping us cook.
God Be With you, Cin(\0/)

ReplyDeleteMove over, let me have a chance too! Man, do you think they could teach this Mennonite Girl to cook better? I'll betcha............they can.

Oh, dear. Another blog to check out. I'm reading much too much these days and not getting any work done around here. However, I love Mennonite recipes. Two of my favourite cookbooks at home are "Food that Schmecks" and "More Food that Schmecks" by a Mennonite of the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. I am Dutch, not Mennonite, but I enjoy the simple recipes that often use whole grains, butter and lard. They are do-able and often very good. I haven't had a recipe fail yet. I'm sure this book is full of tried and true recipes as well.
ReplyDeletewould love to have a cookbook like this. kurtzhomestead@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteWe almost never eat out and we minister to family and friends through food so good cookbooks are a must. This one is sure to be a winner.

ReplyDeleteI would love to have this! Sounds great!
ReplyDeleteI collect cookbooks and the Mennononite cookbooks are harder to find than any others. I love to "read" them, comparing the era it was written in versus how things are today. They are mini history lessons. I would love to have a copy of this cookbook.
ReplyDeleteThank you for such a wonderful review. It is truly humbling to be a part of this book. The best thing about it is to see how God is going to use it to bless others. For truly we have been blessed so much already we just want to share what we can.
ReplyDeleteThank you again for encouraging us in this way.....Charlotte from Mennonite Girls Can Cook.
Thanks so much Gina. .I have your review posted on our blog. We so appreciate you helping us get the word out there. It will be fun to see who wins this one.

ReplyDeleteI might not be Mennonite, but I am thoroughly enjoying the blog with all those wonderful recipes! Would love the cookbook but it is sure to be expensive to get it shipped over here to me in Australia. Wish someone would just send me a copy!!!
