Classic Picture Books - Part 2

More classic picture books for children! I loved reading about some of your favorites in the first post!

Henry the Explorer
Henry the Explorer by Mark Taylor
The illustrations so perfectly match the story.

One Morning in Maine (Picture Puffins)
One Morning in Maine by Robert McCloskey
One of the first books I remember reading and rereading.

The Happy Lion (Read to a Child!: Level 2)
The Happy Lion by Louise Fatio
Some of the sequels are even better. I love The Happy Lion Roars!

The Story of Ferdinand (Puffin Storytime)
Ferdinand
My daughter actually had a "Ferdinand" experience of sitting on a bee this summer!

Madeline
Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans
I never loved the illustrations of the Madeline books - but the books are a classic favorite in our house.

Amos & Boris.
Amos and Boris by William Steig
Steig's imagination cranks out many crazy but favorite stories.

Billy And Blaze: A Boy And His Horse
Billy and Blaze by C. W. Anderson
Wonder how many times my brothers borrowed the Billy and Blaze books out of the library?

Caps for Sale- A Tale of a Peddler, a Monkey and Their Monkey Business
Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina
Don't read this book if you don't want to hear your pre-schoolers walk around imitating the peddler!

Just Me by Marie Hall Ets
Somehow this book captures a glimpse of childhood imagination.

The Biggest Bear
The Biggest Bear by Lyn Ward
What can I say...it is another well worn favorite.

Millions of Cats (Gift Edition) (Picture Puffin Books)
Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag
Tickles my children's funny bone.

THE MOON JUMPERS.
The Moon Jumpers by Janice May Udry
This author must know children in summertime.

If your day is hazy and cool like mine...find a child and curl up together to read a book. Think I'll go take my own advice!

  1. It's fun looking at those books again, some of which I haven't read since I was a child.
I've kept so many of my old books and will pass them along to my children and one day they can read them to their children.
Lots of memories in those books!

  2. Great! Most of these I don't ever remember reading, and I'm sure my girls haven't read them. I think I'll request them for Thursday's bookmobile visit.

I thought of another favorite around here - James Marshall's "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".

Of course, all the normal old tales like that are favorites here - The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.

  3. I saved the Billy & Blaze books for our beginning readers ~ They loved them! (especially my horse girls) Sometimes it's hard to know which books to save for them to meet on their own ~ Both ways are fun. My big kids (oldest is now 18) still love to listen to me read aloud :)

  4. Blaze! I loved reading those books as a kid. I`m sure my own children have never read them because I`ve never seen them outside of my childhood library. Most of the others you list this time are new to me.

I`d have to list the Sandra Boynton books as some of my favourites, although they are not old. I loved reading them aloud.

  5. We have lots of favorites. Good children's literature is all you need to teach children to read and love reading.

Lois Lenski (Judy's Journey, Strawberry Girl, Boom Town Boy etc.)
Marguerite DeAngeli (Thee Hannah, Petite Suzanne,Yonnie Wondernose etc.)
Meindert DeJong (The Wheel on the School, Along Came a Dog, The House of Sixty Fathers, Dirk's Dog Bello etc.)
Ralph Moody (Little Britches series, Riders of the Pony Express, etc.)
Arleta Richardson (Stories From Grandma's Attic books)
Robert McClosky (Burt Dow, Make Way for Ducklings etc.)

These are all great authors of wonderful historical and geographical stories that will make book lovers of all who read or hear them and help develop good character and caring children.
