Book Giveaway - Footprints on the Ceiling

Most days I don't feel much over 20.

And even if I want to forget that I'm near 40, my children remind me.

Yesterday my daughter said, "Mom, your hair is not turning gray. It is turning white. Because that is what happens when you are old."

Well, if I am becoming old, I decided I better hang around women who are aging gracefully. Like Dorcas Smucker.

In Dorcas' newest book, Footprints on the Ceiling, she writes about the wonderful things about turning fifty including "seeing the end of the story."

And in this volume Dorcas delights us with stories. Stories of how she wrote off romance - until her footprint on the ceiling of the seed warehouse caught the eye of her future husband. Stories of teaching Grandma to send an email and a daughter to make an apple crisp.  Stories of a mother's botched Christmas plans complete with a yowling stray cat which turn out with a good ending after all.

And that is just the first three chapters.

Dorcas has that gift of seeing stories in every day happenings. And even better she sees redemption and second chances in those stories. Not every story ends with "happily ever after" but all end with the hope of seven miles of daffodils that bloom long after the death of the one who planted the bulbs. I read Footprints on the Ceiling laughing at the craziness (and interrupting Ed's book to read to him about Grandma and the Media), crying at the tender spots, and nodding as Dorcas gives a dose of encouragement.

If  you have read Dorcas' other books  Ordinary Days, Upstairs the Peasants are Revolting, Downstairs the Queen is Knitting, and Tea Cups and Trouble Brewing,  you have followed her through motherhood. In Footprints on the Ceiling, her six children are spreading their wings and moving out into the world on their own.

And since I still claim to be a younger woman - a few bends in the road behind Dorcas, I took note of her tips on parenting - teaching a daughter how to recover a blueberry muffin disaster, learning that digging through garbage might not be the best way to fix problems, and keeping connections strong when a son chooses a different path.

As Dorcas says, "I've learned to be relieved when the cookies taste awful and the car runs out of gas. It means my husband and I have managed, for the moment, to set the boundaries where our teenagers are making choices for themselves but he consequences are still manageable."

As her children grow up, Dorcas' parents are aging. She records stories from her heritage such as washing your face in dew on the first day of May. She discovers she is like her mother in the blackberry patch - and in noticing the outcasts. She sits in the ICU and considers the dividends on the long term investment of raising children.

Dorcas grew up Amish and is now the wife of a Mennonite minister in Oregon. Recently my sister-in-law  gave one of Dorcas' books to a friend who thought she understood the Mennonites and Amish by reading Amish novels. (She didn't.)  Dorcas' books are human and real and a far better glimpse of true life than a novel. From every day life in Oregon to travels to Jamaica and Thailand, Dorcas gives me hope that fifty can indeed be wonderful.

Learn more about Dorcas at her blog Life in the Shoe,

And now the good news.

I have a signed copy of Footprints on the Ceiling for one of you. Let a comment below (if you are reading this by email, click on over to Home Joys to let the comment) to enter the giveaway. If you want, you can share a brief story of how you met your husband (even if it was not with a footprint on the ceiling). Be sure to leave your email address so I can contact you.

Dorcas gave me a review copy of her book but all the opinions on this post are my own. I will never recommend a book that I do not truly enjoy.

Footprints on the Ceiling is available for $15 per book, postage included.  You can mail a check to Dorcas Smucker, 31148 Substation Drive, Harrisburg, OR 97446.  US addresses only.  To send a copy to Canada or overseas, email Dorcas at dorcassmucker@gmail.com

  1. Hi Gina! I am new to your blog, and I love it! I would love to win a copy of that book, your description of it was fantastic! To answer the question of how I met my husband, we met online 15 years ago. I know that a lot of marriages of people who met online don't last, but with God's guidance, we are the exception!!

  4. Well, I met my husband at church, of course! I was a single, young woman who had been attending a new church for about 6 months. I had not noticed Curt because I was so soul hungry for the best Bible teaching I had ever had in my life. Meanwhile, he had noticed me, but would not ask me out until he found out if I was older than him. Back in the day (38 years ago) we put our full birth dates on Sunday school rosters. He was so relieved and encouraged to know that he was a full 3 months older than me. So, now to get up his courage to follow me across the street to my house and ask me out. He chicken out the first week, but the next week, even though he vomited than morning from nervousness, he followed through and..........as they say, the rest in history.
How many of you gals have had a guy vomit over nervousness to date you? Wow, am I special or what.
    Ha, Ha!
    The book sounds delightful!

  9. Hi Gina! Thanks for sharing such great reads! This one looks really good! My husband and I met 20 years ago at a Christmas gathering when I was 13 and he, 17. He was working with the horses, giving sleigh rides. We got to chatting and our friendship developed from there. We have now been married for 10 years and have witnessed God's faithfulness through the good and not-so-good times. I pray that you have a blessed Thanksgiving week!

  15. HI! Even though we grew up two miles from each other all our lives it took two years of teaching at the same school (and to top it off that first year we didn't really like each other!) for God to work in our hearts and light the flame of love and here we are seven years later with three beautiful daughters! Would love to read this book!

  22. How I would enjoy this book. I've never read any of her books! I have been following her blog for a couple of years now, though. How did I meet my husband? In brief, I grew up in Pa, went to MS for a wedding, met him and was IMPRESSED, went home, came back a year later to teach in our church school here, in the same community Dorcas' younger sister Margaret came to teach in a different Mennonite school around the same time! Obviously, our paths crossed again, we had lots of fun being in the same youth group, our feelings both gradually became mutual and, short version, a few years later we became husband and wife! I've never regretted meeting him!! :-))

  30. @ Kim, my husband vomited with nervousness over the time he asked me out as well :) Our relationship was a little nerve-wracking for both of us though... we met one time at a volleyball tournament, he asked me out 3 weeks later, 3 days before I left for a term of service in Canada and from there I was committed to a school year in Haiti. So we dated for 3 no before we had an actual date face to face... and real live dates were few and far between after that. He proposed to me 6 mo later, on our 5th actual date. Needless to say, marriage was wonderful- we got to see each other every.single.day.
I would love to win this book for my mother-in-law (I would read it first, though :)

  70. Hi Gina. I met my husband when I was 15 and a soph in high school. He was a senior and 19. My parents almost didn't let me date him because of the age difference. He was so respectful and sweet. He won my parents over. He graduated that same year and went into the Navy and I of course finished school. My dream was to always be a wife and mommy. We married in Sept of the year I graduated. We have 3 beautiful children and 4 beautiful grands. This year we celebrated our 50th Anniversary!! God has allowed us to "grow-up and grow-old" together! It hasn't always been easy but with God's grace we have gotten through the difficult times. We are still looking to Him for guidance and direction in our "Golden Years." I would like very much to win the book and share with my youngest daughter that is raising two youngins'. Thank you for the opportunity to share a little of my life with you. 71. Back in my early twenties I had a two-year commitment working as a secretary at the American Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. One day a tall, handsome guy whom I had seen around the embassy (but did not know yet) had occasion to walk into my office. He saw the birthday card I had just received from my parents standing upright on my desk and asked, "Is it your birthday?" When I told him that it had been yesterday, he said, "Well, happy birthday--mine's tomorrow." We both laughed and that broke the ice and started a long chain of life-changing events. We also saw each other at the "church for foreigners" which met in the pastor's home in Kabul. Our first date was a ride in a big Land Rover jeep over a rocky, bumpy, dusty dirt road up to a mountain village where we shared our picnic lunch of fried chicken with some very hungry yellow jackets. It turned out that I was from Idaho and he was from Oregon. In a few months I was due to complete my duties there in December of 1960 and return to Idaho, and he to Oregon in January 1961. We were both Christians, both farm "kids", by then both in the second half of our twenties, and in retrospect could see the Lord's sovereign hand in all the details of bringing us together. We've been married fifty-two years and are still laughing and celebrating our birthdays together. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

  72. I would love to win the book. But you are going to have a hard decision, many good posts. I met my husband in a corn stand in 1974. He happened to be the assistant teacher for the Agriculture dept. His job was to teach the students how to operate the farm equipment safely. I first saw him when he happened to be dumping a skip loader bucket full of fresh picked corn into the front of the stand I was working in . Our job was to bag the corn for sale to the public.
When I got home that day, I told my mom, "today I met the man I'm going to marry ". She laughed and said "Oh really ". We married in 1976. 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild later, here we are. Things have not all been smooth sailing. I guess that's what makes you appreciate the good times all the more. The present generation does not realize the hard work involved in marriage. When things get too hard, its time to move on. Unfortunately its the children that pay the price. Sorry for the sermon.

  80. Aaahhh! A book by one of my favorite bloggers... given away by another of my favorite bloggers!!

My husband and I met at a youth rally - they still have those in the churches of Christ - introduced by a mutual friend that had been on youth puppet teams with each of us, but in separate cities.

I do love reading about the Amish, but would never claim any real expertise on the subject. Did love the book, "Almost Amish". My folks are friends with the German Baptist community; my biggest faux pas so far was to refer to one of them, to her face, as Mennonite. Oops... had to go home and do some research after that one.

My neighbors thought we were Amish when we moved in, because we have more than two children, and I bake and can. The minivan, tractor and blue jeans apparently weren't considered clues.

Will stop now before I possibly offend further... I would sign in via Wordpress, but it doesn't like me for some reason!

  86. I met my husband when he moved down south to work for his cousin and attended the same church as I did. His temporary work became long-term. He never did move back to his home area! I enjoy reading Dorcas' books! Her writings are down-to-earth and I can identify with so many of her stories.

  88. We met when we were in a bridal party together, at his brother and my friend's wedding... By the end of that day spent with him, I was quite impressed! He was different than most guys I knew... I kept giving him into the Lord's hands until 9 mo. later when he blew me away by calling me and asking me for my friendship!

  90. I have already won this book on the blog tour and so Please DO NOT enter me in your drawing...lets be fair. That said you are why I'm still following the blog tour.
1-your writing is clear and enjoyable (I'll check out more of your blog when I'm finished here).
2-you came up with a creative and interesting way to get your readers to interact. I have enjoyed reading all the "how we met" stories.
    Now mine:
I met my husband in HS and knew who he was only the next year his younger sister came to HS and my younger brother introduced me to her. She said her brother didn't want her to bug him at school. I paid a little more attention to him, though maybe not positive attention. He graduated in Jan and went into the Navy and his sister encouraged me to correspond with him while he was away. We dated a bit until he was stationed in Japan. I married someone else at a time when I had turned my back on God and that husband left me with 2 kids. This husband kept in touch through his sisters, who encourage he and I to get together. We married, he helped me raise those two children who have brought us 6 grandchildren. He also encouraged me to be ME and is supporting me thought my fight with breast cancer. God game me a better choice than my own and I thank Him.
Thank you for getting all of us to share our stories!
