Corn Day

The annual family corn day...

  1. How wonderful! I don't have any family around interested in canning or preserving food so it is a pretty solitary process here.

  3. Looks like so much fun. It is so much nice to work with others. We planted two short rows of corn in the garden this year in a spot we had left, first time here so waiting to see how it does. Hopefully at least enough for fresh eating.

  4. Curious - how many ears did you end up taking care of? We're looking at doing about a 1,000 (with family) this coming Saturday.

    We love Incredible! It's a yellow corn. Have you ever heard of that?

    1. We love Incredible corn too!

      I don't think anyone counted how many we did. We just picked everything that was ready! It was a smaller amount than we needed so more corn was done another day. This year my dad has smaller patches instead of one huge patch so the corn got ready in small amounts.

  5. What fun! I wish my family would do more things like that together! I can a lot of food but its just my husband and I and our three children. Today is canning potatoes and spaghetti sauce. I have already put up 23 dozen corn, but our late patch is coming in next week probably, so I will have about 30 more dozen to cut off! Just my husband and I and our oldest daughter! Its a long hard day but I, very thankful for the food in the freezer!

      My mom could probably tell you the same story when we children were young! But now that we are grown, there is more help - but also more families to provide corn for!

  8. Whoa...a corn desilker?? What brand, are they still made?? I never heard of one, but could sure use one!! Do you cut it off the cob by hand or with an electric knife? I did corn yesterday, and my hand is still sore from holding the buttons down on the electric knife.
    Our freezers are full, so from here on out I am canning and dehydrating.

    1. I really don't know who makes them, or where they come from, or if they are still available. Sorry for the lack of information!

      We cut the corn just with a knife. I never thought about using an electric knife. It probably would be easier - though either way, doing a lot of corn gives hand cramps!

  9. I never thought to cook the corn BEFORE cutting it off the cob. Does that stop the kernels from shooting all over the place?

      Some people like to cut the corn first so that you don't have to cook the whole cob, but we think it is easier to cut when it is cooked and cooled. It is still a splattery job, but we think we don't lose as much of the juice.
