Be Still, My Soul

This hymn has been Ed's favorite for years. When I went looking for the words to share with you, I found that the original poem had two additional verses that I never remember seeing in a hymn book. I'm listing the entire poem here.

Be Still, My Soul
by Katharina A. von Schlegel
Translated by Jane L. Borthwick

  1. Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
    Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
    Leave to thy God to order and provide;
    In every change, He faithful will remain.
    Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heav’nly Friend
    Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
  2. Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
    To guide the future, as He has the past.
    Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
    All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
    Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
    His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.
  3. Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
    And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
    Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
    Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
    Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
    From His own fullness all He takes away.
  4. Be still, my soul: the hour is hast’ning on
    When we shall be forever with the Lord.
    When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
    Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
    Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
    All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
  5. Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise
    On earth, believing, to Thy Lord on high;
    Acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways,
    So shall He view thee with a well-pleased eye.
    Be still, my soul: the Sun of life divine
    Through passing clouds shall but more brightly shine.

  1. "Thy Jesus can repay from His own fullness all He takes away."

    My head knows this to be true, but my heart aches at the painful ways He teaches us this truth. We lose so that we may gain. Thank you for including the additional verses. They were new to me, too.

  12. That is a beautiful hymn. Thank you. I was diagnosed with uterine cancer on April 21. My surgery was on May 3. I had a good outcome. The cancer was all inside, but was almost halfway through the uterine wall. I have a couple more tests to make sure it is gone for good. Praying for you and your husband. Hope you have a good outcome too. My Mom had stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer 18 yrs ago. She is a walking miracle at 78 yrs old. Keep fighting! ~Diane

  17. One of the first times I heard/ sang this song was about 24 years ago when your in-laws held a singing at their farm. Be Still My Soul is a very meaningful song and encourages many of us in many different ways.

  18. It's very interesting that you mention this song, because I just found the verse you mentioned about "when dearest friends depart," but I never heard of the last verse you mentioned. I really like this song...I'm keeping you and your family in prayer.

  21. I stumbled upon your blog today. I have read in the past and enjoyed the posts of your simple, love filled family days. I know how difficult this time is for you and your family. I want you to know I am praying for strength and wisdom as you navigate this difficult passage of time. There truly is a peace that passes understanding, and with God central in all you do, He will provide all you need, but I think you already know this. Peace to you.
