The last few weeks, I've been spending a lot of time sewing new summer dresses for my daughters in my new sewing room.
"Sewing room" is an exaggerated description. "Sewing corner" would be more adequate. But for years, my sewing machine has been in my sons' room. Not only was it inconveniently located, but I couldn't sew during nap time. I love having a new space, however small, just for sewing.
Last year when we added onto our house, we began using our new entrance as the main entrance into our house. The front door entrance was not used frequently and I wondered if the space could find a better use. With two electric outlets already there, a sewing corner was the perfect solution.
My ironing board fit along the wall between doorways.
A small typing table (discarded from my grandparents) just fit in the space behind the door beside the coat closet. Ed talks of sometime buying some stock cabinets and putting in some built in cabinets, but this is working well now.
I cleared the bottom shelf of the coat closet to hold my pattern boxes, sewing basket, sleeve ironing board, and containers with other sewing supplies. The closet is perfect for holding the hanging laundry awaiting the iron. When the ironing board is not in use, it also fits inside the closet.
I love the sunshine that streams into this east facing corner. When ironing, I can open the door. When sewing, I have to shut the door but light still comes in the side light.
Best of all, this corner is only steps from my kitchen. I find myself more willing to sew a few seams while waiting for a pot to boil since I'm not at the other end of the house. Because it is small and open to the rest of the house, I'm encouraged to keep the area tidy, which in turn, inspires me to sew more often.
I'm not sharing these photos to persuade you to turn your front entry into a sewing room. I want to encourage you to use your house in a way that makes sense for you and your family - even if you use a space for a completely different purpose than designed.
Have you found a creative use for unused space in your home?
Looks like a great set up Gina - love the natural light!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your new found space!
My house has no unused space!:) I love using nooks and crannies for certain things. We are cramped though and I always feel cluttered, something that is a trial for me. One of those things the Lord is using to me a lesson of being content.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely space and a good use of a small area! Enjoy your new sewing spot!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely sewing machine xxx
ReplyDeleteI love your use of space. What a great idea! I'm in serious need of some decluttering to make space for other more productive things :) Happy sewing!
ReplyDeleteI love the space and all the light! I love being creative with small, unused spaces! Great job! I think I need to pull my sewing machine out of the garage and get to hunting an nice spot! :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like the perfect spot! ....and it's all YOURS :-)
ReplyDeleteLove your new sewing area. We use our entryway (Which is only used by guests!) as a space for a large desk which we can close up. It houses our computer, printer, etc.)
ReplyDeleteYour sewing area looks great. Very well lit, which in my opinion, makes it so much nicer. Enjoy your sewing and God bless.
ReplyDeleteFor years I used corners to as the kids were growing up..Now the kids are gone I have a sewing room and end up bringing the sewing machine to the dining room table...I think where ever you sew is such a blessing...so many can't sew and won't even think about it...
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your nook you made the perfect place for you...
Have a great day..Lisa
I how you did this! It's amazing to discover a new way to use space. We are in the process of some room-switching that will give me my own little room for sewing and desk work. I'm excited (but the room is probably temporary for a couple years).
ReplyDeleteA wonderful and creative use of space!
ReplyDeleteHi Gina. After spending 8 months in my 28ft caravan (trailer) following a burglary at my house I realised that I can 'make do' with things that before would have irritated me. I learned to use the tiny spaces in the caravan and got used to being creative with them. It was a sense of achievement to keep finding solutions. My husband could not believe how much stuff I fitted in - he said it may explode!! It was a hard emotional time but I have learned and grown alot from it. I am just about to learn to sew and have received a new sewing machine yesterday. Can't wait! Lily. xxx
ReplyDeleteI am really really admiring that CLEAN FLOOR!
ReplyDeleteThat spot reminds me a little of my Mom's sewing corner when I was a child. The doorway from the living room to the dining room left just enough space (on the DR side) to fit a sewing machine table in the corner. It was also open to the whole house and Mom could see everything from there in the living room or the kitchen. In a small way, your spot reminds me of hers, and makes me appreciate all the time she spent making summer outfits and Sabbath dresses for me. Thanks for sharing!
