For some time I've been wishing for a tortilla press. I've been making my own tortillas for a while now and am hoping a press would help speed the process.
Do any of you use a tortilla press? What kind do you recommend? I am looking at this
tortilla press, but would love to have input from you!
Gina, I have a Norpro like this one:

Love it! I use a two sheets of cling-wrap to make peeling up the tortillas easy. So easy. I'll never use a rolling pin again. ~Liz
Oh wow! I want one too. I do the whole roll out the dough method. Sometimes too thick and more like Naan bread!
ReplyDeleteI bought one on Ebay a while ago. It came with an electric tortilla maker and a press. The press is small (corn tortilla size) but it works fine, but I prefer to make my tortillas in my electric tortilla maker - usually with it off and then cook it on the stove. But I like to use it as well (the electric one). I just found most presses were smaller in size. Does that help?
ReplyDeleteI have an electric press and I like it a lot. I found that you must allow your dough to "rest" then press your tortillas. I didn't do this because I was in a hurry and they never flattened out!
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy yours as well.
Kim
I have been after one of these too, so I am keen to read what people think!
ReplyDeleteBeing GlutenFree and having a tortilla "roller" would make life awesome. I'd get something like this. This is the style that they use in restaurants.

Or how about this type....

I don't have one but I am going to check the answers. I have been thinking of getting one also and would love to know what others think.
ReplyDeleteI also wanted to tell you what a blessing your blog is to me. I feel the Lords love coming through and have learned so much from your recipes.
Keep on posting.

That would be the one I have although mine is the lighter cast iron color. I love it!
ReplyDeleteMy sweetie gave me one for Christmas a few years ago. We have beans and tortilla quite regular in the winter and tortillas are so easy to whip up... even easier than biscuits in my opinion. We've had some success, but wish it would make larger tortilla since we like larger rounds to stuff with beans and greens. If I had it to purchase over again I would have gone with a larger size.
ReplyDeleteIt's a handy gadget for those who eat lots of tortilla.
I bought a tortilla press awhile ago but mine is double duty - it presses and toasts them all at once. I used it a lot when I made tortillas. I bought mine on Ebay for about $12-$14 and it has easily repaid me with soft whole wheat tortillas. Mmmm.

ReplyDeleteThis is what I use. My sister bought it for me when she was in New Mexico and I think it comes from Mexico. It doesn't fry them, but heats up very hot and works beautifully. I flip them onto a hot griddle to finish them off. I've had it for 9 yrs. and it works as good as day one.
the cast iron in the picture is used for corn tortillas. if that is what you want to make they work great. just place the masa between two sheets of plastic (cut open a ziplock). Not used for flour tortillas.
ReplyDeleteI have this press and it works well for us. I use two pieces of plastic cut from a clean grocery bag as the thicker plastic seems to work better for us. We love homemade corn tortillas! I also have my oldest daughter do the tortillas while I toast them on the griddle. YUM!
ReplyDeleteI have one, similar to the one you have posted here. It flattens them, but not very large, and I end up rolling them out anyways. I get something more along the lines of "chalupas" rather than tortillas.
ReplyDeleteInteresting answers! I haven't even attempted making tortillas yet. But the only advice I've had on presses was to just use a rolling pin. Somehow I like the press idea better ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh, but I would like a BIG one ~ I usually buy the "burrito" size flour tortillas. I will check out the restaurant version first...
I have one similar to this just not cast iron. It is great and does speed things up - only you have to use some thing like plastic wrap or wax paper to prevent sticking. I also find it is nice for making hamburger patties.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your input! I haven't had internet service today - but if the computer cooperates, I'll check out some of the links you shared.

hmmmm. I made tortillas a few times, but smoked up the house too much for my liking. I borrowed a tortilla press, but didn't think it did more than a rolling pin. I hope you're going to talk about your method/recipe, pretty please!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have lots of suggestions Gina, but here is one more. I am saving to purchase this nifty one at Paula's Bread: http://www.paulasbread.com/small-kitchen-appliances/grand-tortilla-press.html
ReplyDeleteIt appears to press and bake. Have fun!
You might have all ready made your purchase, but just in case you are looking for an electric one (like mine) my mom has some to buy at her house. They are running 48 dollars though... She got some shipped to her because so many people wanted them.
