Continuing to share favorite picture books. Go here to find the Winter book list.
Many of our children's favorite books focus on animals and life in the country. Some of these books were my favorites when I was a girl.
Oxcart Man by Donald Hall
Favorite story of pioneer diligence illustrated by our favorite artist, Barbara Cooney.
Brambly Hedge Autumn Story by Jill Barklem
Sweet story and illustrations that make you want to climb into the pictures! I dreamed of living in Brambly Hedge as a child. The other seasons are also available in this series.
G is for Goat by Patricia Polacco
A new book on our shelf. Once again, it is the illustrations that pull me, this time sweet girls in pinafores and adorable floppy eared goats. If you like goats, this is definitely the book for you.
A Year at Maple Hill Farm by Alice and Martin Provensen
Another favorite author and illustrator.
James Herriot's Treasury for Children
A Yorkshire vet shares sweet animal stories.
Pelle's New Suit by Elsa Beskow
This book has recently been republished. I love how different members of the community work together to make a suit out of wool for Pelle.
Little Puppy by Judy Dunn
All of our children have loved this series of books about various animals.
Now it is your turn, what are your favorite books celebrating the agrarian life? I'll be making out a library list!
All of the Little House books, of course, and also A Farmer's Alphabet, by Mary Azarian.
ReplyDeleteI will be looking for these titles at the library Gina! My grandson will love them. At 3, he spends his days with his farm set and his Noah's Ark set.
ReplyDeleteI'll ask my daughter for her recommendations. She has so many books for the boys, that they love :)
have a blessed weekend

I loved Herriot when I was a kid! Fabulous stories. Marguerite Henry was another favorite, and when I got older, I read a lot of Ernest Thompson Seton. I may need to read Brighty of the Grand Canyon this weekend. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the book Charlotte's Web. I used to read it to my preschool class during quite time. I would finish reading to them and they would want me to start it all over again.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a children's book, but I've really enjoyed reading "Family Friendly Farming" by Joel Salatin. It's really a parenting book in a farming context, and a great encouragement for this homeschooling mom, particularly this time of year!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the list; I just put every single one on hold at our local library!

We just found a farming book at the bookmobile - Winnie Finn, Worm Farmer by Carol Brendler.
ReplyDeleteVery cute and a great introduction to worm farming, which I haven't convinced myself to do yet!
We found another great farming book! On the bookmobile, of course.
ReplyDelete"Oh, Crumps!" by Lee Bock, illustrated by Morgan Midgett.
This is hilarious! It's about a farmer who's tired at the end of the day and the kind of a night's rest he has.
My girls just laughed and laughed all the way through this - it was hard to read it because we were all laughing so hard!
