I highly recommend Teaching Textbooks as well as the IEW writing program. I am a co-director at our homeschool co-op and this writing program has made an immense difference in all our student's writing! Plus, it was one that offered free online testing to see what level she should start in. I wasn't sure where to put her at the time even though she was technically kindergarten age because she was already reading and spelling at about a third grade level. ACE helped me figure out where to place her. I also have had her in piano lessons for over three years now, since I'm not qualified to teach her any music:-) Thank you for telling us what curriculum you use.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4916485057164205644.post-76578946848829135822018-01-27T12:41:13.577-05:002018-01-27T12:41:13.577-05:00Thanks for giving your experience!

Personally Teaching Textbooks was not a good fit for our family (I'll sell you ours:)) and wish we would have just stuck with ACE/CLE. Oh, that winter slump, no doubt! We lighten things up by watching Frozen Planet and Planet Earth, listen to Mystery of History CD's etc at this time of the year. Going for mile walks sound wonderful, but up here in Canada right now. . . BRR! I went to various meetings with families that went with one type or another, went to the home school book exchanges and store etc. I was struck at how easy it would be to combine elements and custom make programs for individual children. One outstanding discovery (well used in my GD early education) was the very creative use of "hands on math" Before this delightful discovery, I thought there was no escaping the drudgery of basic math. This used legos, cheerios, pick-up sticks, and much more to make adding, subtracting/ multiplying and division a very fun adventure. I don't recall a specific book, but found resources online, and at 'math fairs' for children. GD is now in 7th grade and sailing through algebra.
All this to say, is I found the most helpful thing for me was going to the book exchanges, talking to other home school parents and browsing home school resources and forums online.I was amazed at the creativity! I imagine that there are even more choices and discoveries since my wading in to the home school world, about 10 years ago.Grandma Ruthnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4916485057164205644.post-733427102509982152018-01-27T10:26:33.068-05:002018-01-27T10:26:33.068-05:00Thanks for sharing your experience, Dawn. I am a new reader, having found your blog via a sourdough recipe! :) I wanted to say that I have been using Teaching Textbooks for my 17 year old and 12 year old since 4th grade, and it has been wonderful for both children. It allows them to advance in math WITHOUT my guidance, as there are daily lectures and lessons/practice, so it frees up my time. The grade book allows me to check on their progress. If they get "stuck", usually going back to hear the lecture again solves the problem. So, as your older children get into advanced math, it might be a great tool for them!
Math was never my strength, so it is nice to have such a great program, and each grade purchased can be used for multiple children, as the grade books can be erased. Hurray!Dawnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06124924283587543982noreply@blogger.com
